Jianwei Shoutai Pills reduce uterine aging and pregnancy loss in aged mice
The herbal formula delayed thymic involution, restored regulatory T cell function, and improved maternal-fetal immune tolerance by altering metabolic signaling in aging female mice.
In aged female mice, researchers investigated how Jianwei Shoutai Pills affect early pregnancy loss and uterine senescence. The team evaluated uterine and placental tissues using histopathology, flow cytometry, molecular assays, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. Treatment with the formula reduced senescent cell accumulation, collagen deposition, and inflammation in the aged uterus, creating a better environment for embryo implantation. It also delayed age-related thymic involution, increasing the proportion and suppressive function of decidual regulatory T cells. Further analyses showed that the treatment downregulated HIF-1α expression, which reduced excessive lactate accumulation and restored ATP levels at the maternal-fetal interface. Together, these metabolic and immune adjustments restored immune tolerance and prevented early miscarriage.
Why it matters
Age-related reproductive decline stems partly from immune dysfunction and tissue senescence. Showing that metabolic reprogramming can slow thymic and uterine aging offers new insights into preserving maternal-fetal immune tolerance.
Caveats
The findings are limited to an animal model, and mouse reproductive immunology differs substantially from human pregnancy. Further research is necessary to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and specific active constituents in humans.
