Abstract

During infection, the immune system balances pathogen resistance with disease tolerance to mitigate damage. In a recent Nature paper, Sanchez and colleagues reveal that cardiac Foxo1-Trim63 protects young mice from polymicrobial sepsis but drives mortality in aged hosts, demonstrating how early-life disease tolerance mechanisms can paradoxically compromise late-life survival.¹.
