Aging: The Running Cost of the Chisel-Construct Cycle — A Self-as-an-End Meta-Proposition / 衰老:凿构循环的运行代价——Self-as-an-End 元命题
Abstract
Full bilingual text and framework available at self-as-an-end.net Description / Abstract (English) Companion papers argued that consciousness discontinuity is a constitutive condition of subjecthood (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19201237), and that sleep, meditation, and flow constitute a toolkit for managing the 12DD predictive cache (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19226545). This paper pushes the same logic chain to the ultimate scale, addressing: can aging be eliminated? The paper proposes a second-order model of aging: aging is not the over-accumulation of damage to the maintained object (first-order) but the progressive failure of the maintenance system itself (second-order). The maintenance system's tools — autophagy, synaptic downscaling, stem cell renewal, telomerase — are themselves aging, and the efficiency of maintaining the maintenance is also declining. This is recursive degradation with no immutable anchor. The model unifies cognitive aging at the 12DD level (declining synaptic plasticity rules, reduced downscaling efficiency with age-related loss of deep slow-wave sleep) and bodily aging at the channel level (deteriorating proteostasis, declining autophagy, telomere shortening, senescent cell accumulation). An additional previously untheorized cost is identified: 13DD idle-running (self-without-purpose) may be more expensive than normal 12DD operation, as chronic rumination produces cortisol via the HPA axis without functional output, accelerating hippocampal atrophy and chronic inflammation. Purpose (14DD) may be protective by eliminating this idle-running cost. For high-complexity self-bearing organisms, global stopping and reversal of aging are extraordinarily difficult under current biological constraints. However, the headroom for delay may be far greater than assumed — caloric restriction extends mouse lifespan 30–50%, rapamycin extends lifespan even when started late, and partial reprogramming, senolytics, and epigenetic resetting offer genuine hope for local rejuvenation. Three predictions are presented: (1) A U-curve — both overload and disuse accelerate aging, with the optimum in the middle (supported by CALERIE trial data, d≈0.2–0.3 for DunedinPACE under CR). (2) The DoC brain-aging paradox — after strict matching for injury type and inflammatory burden, high-metabolism cortical regions in prolonged disorders of consciousness patients (where chisel-construct cycle has nearly ceased) may show slower aging pace than age-matched controls. This is a high-risk, never-previously-proposed, technically testable hypothesis. (3) A speculative cross-species association between the ratio of 12DD complexity to maintenance system efficiency and aging rate. The core trade-off: self's operation has costs, cost accumulation is aging, but costs can be managed. The paper closes with: "You are not growing old. You are paying the fee for having a self." 14DD(purpose)可能通过消除空转代价而具有保护作用。 License Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) Related Identifiers Is supplement to (SAE meta-propositions): DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19201237 (Life and Death, Self and No-Self) Is supplement to (SAE foundational papers): DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18528813 (Systems, Emergence, and the Conditions of Personhood) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18666645 (Internal Colonization and the Reconstruction of Subjecthood) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18727327 (The Complete Self-as-an-End Framework) Is supplement to (SAE applied papers): DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19176873 (Dreams, Anesthesia, and the Sequential Dependency Structure of Consciousness) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19226545 (Daily Applications of Consciousness Discontinuity) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19321314 (SAE Psychoanalysis II: Ego — Self Without Purpose) References: DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18907264 (HC-16 Personality Taxonomy) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18842450 (SAE Methodological Overview) Subjects Philosophy of Mind, Geroscience, Consciousness Studies, Neurophilosophy, Aging Biology, Self-as-an-End Notes Bilingual publication: Chinese is the authoritative text; English is an independent rewrite (not a translation).
