Abstract
BACKGROUND: Stress and anxiety are common experiences that many elderly adults encounter due to various factors such as changes in health, social dynamics, and existential concerns. Societal expectations, health-related issues, and feelings of hopelessness can exacerbate these challenges. Those who struggle to manage their mental health may exhibit mood fluctuations, alterations in behaviors, and physical symptoms. The beneficial method for managing stress and anxiety involves employing the thought-stopping technique, which aids in slowing down unwanted negative thoughts and fostering mental health. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the thought-stopping technique on stress and anxiety levels among the elderly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2024 at selected old age homes in Mangaluru, Karnataka. 84 participants (42 in the intervention group and 42 in the control group) were recruited using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. The study was conducted among the elderly staying at selected old age homes in Mangaluru. The data was collected using a baseline proforma, perceived stress scale (PSS), and generalized anxiety scale (GAD). The obtained data wanalyzedusing descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The study included elderly participants primarily aged 60-65, with a similar gender distribution between groups. The present study showed a significant reduction in the level of stress (P < 0.001) and anxiety (P < 0.001). The present study showed that the obtained r value was 0.464 (P < 0.001). There was a high positive correlation between the pretest level of stress and anxiety. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that the thought-stopping technique was effective in reducing stress and anxiety among the elderly at selected old-age homes in Mangaluru, and it is recommended that thought-stopping technique be incorporated into routine mental health care for the elderly in old-age homes to reduce stress and anxiety.
