Mental Health and Quality of Life in Older Adults: The Role of Emotional Intelligence and Relaxation: A Randomized Controlled Trial
12 weeks
Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to analyze the impact of emotional intelligence and relaxation techniques on the mental health and quality of life of older adults. METHODS: A 12-week randomized controlled trial included 137 older adults: 68 in a control group (CG) and 69 in an experimental group (EG) who followed an emotional intelligence and relaxation program. Anxiety was assessed using the Hamilton Scale, depression with the Yesavage Scale, perceived stress with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and quality of life with the SF-36. RESULTS: After a program of emotional intelligence and relaxation exercises, significant improvements were found in calmness, depression, stress and all dimensions of quality of life compared to a control group. CONCLUSIONS: Emotional intelligence and relaxation interventions improve mental health and quality of life in older adults, supporting their role as non-pharmacological strategies. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: These findings highlight the importance of integrating emotional education and relaxation techniques as essential non-pharmacological strategies to enhance mental health and quality of life in older adults.
