In China, 2,181,318 adults aged 18 or older enrolled between 2008 and 2024 in the 10 cohorts that make up the PRECISE Consortium. This observational research platform combines randomized clinical trials and community-based cohorts that follow people over time. Participants represented 31 provincial-level regions in mainland China. Their median age at enrollment was 61.2 years; 51.7% were women, and 66.5% lived in rural areas.

Researchers standardized demographic, nutrition, lifestyle, clinical and laboratory data across cohorts. Some cohorts also measured nutritional and genetic markers. Through national mortality records, researchers documented 139,843 deaths over a combined 8.77 million years of follow-up across participants. These included 70,962 deaths from diseases of the heart and blood vessels and 33,211 from tumors.

Why it matters

The authors aim to use the resource to investigate relationships between nutrition, metabolic health, lifestyle and chronic disease, supporting efforts to promote healthy longevity.

Caveats

This report describes a research platform, not evidence that a particular diet changes disease or mortality risk. Nutritional and genetic markers were measured in only some cohorts.
