HRS-7535 improved blood-sugar control in type 2 diabetes

A blood-sugar measure fell 16 and 20 mmol/mol with 30 mg and 60 mg daily, versus 4 mmol/mol with placebo over 16 weeks.

Randomised trial in 155 peopleInterventions

16 weeks, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, registered NCT06393348

Follow

The randomised trial enrolled 155 Chinese adults aged 18–75 with type 2 diabetes. Their blood sugar remained inadequately controlled on metformin and sodium–glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors, another type of diabetes medicine. Participants took 30 mg or 60 mg of HRS-7535, or placebo, once daily for 16 weeks. Treatment assignments remained concealed until study completion.

Both doses reduced glycated haemoglobin, a measure of average blood sugar, more than placebo did. At 60 mg, body weight fell 2.4%, versus 0.7% with placebo. Most adverse events arising during treatment were mild to moderate. Digestive problems were the most common. No severe episodes of low blood sugar were reported. The only adverse event leading to treatment discontinuation occurred in the placebo group.

Why it matters

Type 2 diabetes is relevant to health in later life. The trial examined whether an additional oral medicine could help when two existing medicines did not adequately control blood sugar.

Caveats

The 16-week trial did not establish long-term benefits or harms. Its findings concern Chinese adults aged 18–75 whose diabetes remained inadequately controlled while taking both background medicines.
