Calorie restriction aids calcium balance in mouse pancreas cells
In mouse pancreatic slices, calorie restriction produced faster calcium pulses that protected internal stores against sudden calcium depletion.
Our read
Interventions- Studied:
- Experiments in pancreatic beta cells from mice, against slices from freely fed mice
- What changed:
- Compared with freely fed controls, calorie-restricted mouse beta cells had faster calcium pulses that protected their internal calcium stores
- The catch:
- The degree and duration of calorie restriction are not reported
- In the record:
- One of 4,194 papers on caloric restriction on record: 638 with results in people, 1,499 in animals.
- Why it’s aging research:

In an experiment using pancreatic tissue slices from mice, researchers compared slices from calorie-restricted mice with those from mice allowed to eat freely. They raised glucose levels and imaged calcium changes in individual beta cells, which make insulin.
Calorie-restricted beta cells had more cyclic adenosine monophosphate, a signaling molecule. This caused fast, small calcium pulses that boosted insulin release despite a largely disconnected beta cell network. When researchers stimulated the slices with acetylcholine, a chemical messenger, faster calcium pulses protected cells against sudden depletion of calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum, an internal calcium store. The abstract noted that calorie-restricted beta cells release less insulin overall because the rest of the body responds more strongly to insulin. The authors concluded that calorie restriction supported calcium balance and the cells’ ability to secrete insulin.
Why it matters
Calorie restriction promotes beta cell longevity. This work addresses how calcium handling fits into its effects on the function of these insulin-producing cells.
Caveats
The calcium experiments used isolated mouse pancreatic slices and do not establish effects in people. The abstract does not report the degree or duration of calorie restriction.
