Correlation Between Objective and Subjective Methods in Skin Aging Assessment: A Comparative Approach
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Skin aging is a multifactorial process influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Various assessment methods exist, including subjective clinical scales, such as Glogau and SCINEXA and objective imaging and colorimetric techniques like VisioFace and spectrophotometry. However, the correlation between these methods remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the correlation between subjective and objective methods in assessing photoaging as well as intrinsic (chronological) aging to determine whether objective methods complement or outperform traditional clinical scales. METHODS: A total of 46 photoexposed workers from Huesca participated in this cross-sectional study. Photoaging was assessed using the Glogau and SCINEXA scales, VisioFace imaging, and colorimetric analysis. Pearson correlation tests were conducted to analyze relationships between the methods. RESULTS: The Glogau scale exhibited a moderate correlation with SCINEXA intrinsic aging (r = 0.58) and a strong correlation with SCINEXA extrinsic aging (r = 0.75). However, correlations between subjective scales and VisioFace parameters were weak, with Glogau showing only a slight association with pigmentation (r = 0.21) and skin uniformity (r = -0.29). Similarly, colorimetric measures of erythema and pigmentation correlated more strongly with SCINEXA extrinsic aging (r = 0.34) than with Glogau. The strongest relationships were observed between objective methods, particularly between colorimetric pigmentation values and VisioFace-detected skin spots (r = 0.51). CONCLUSIONS: Subjective and objective methods assess different aspects of photoaging, with clinical scales being more aligned with visible extrinsic damage, while imaging and colorimetry provide quantitative measures of pigmentation and erythema. The findings suggest that combining both approaches yields a more comprehensive evaluation of skin aging, reinforcing the importance of multimodal assessment in dermatological research and clinical practice.
