Depression and loss of autonomy in old age: the protective role of social and recreational activities
Abstract
This study analyzed the relationship between depression, social participation, and autonomy in older adults, using data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study, 2021. It was found that depressive symptoms are associated with a higher likelihood of functional dependence in activities of daily living. In contrast, participation in social, cognitive, and recreational activities is associated with greater autonomy. These results suggest that mental health and an active life may play a key role in healthy aging and in preserving independence in old age.
