Real-World Continuous Glucose Monitoring Profiles Individuals with Prediabetes
Abstract
Introduction and Objective: This study summarizes real-world glucose data from users with prediabetes who used a FreeStyle Libre (FSL) system 1 or 2. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using linked FSL glucose data and Inovalon Insights claims for individuals with prediabetes. Eligible participants had continuous medical and pharmacy enrollment and a diagnosis of prediabetes based on ICD-10 code and subsequent use of FSL. Summary statistics of mean glucose, glucose CV around the median, time above 140 mg/dL and 180 mg/dL were calculated and tabulated by categories of updated glucose monitoring indicator (uGMI) from 5.0 to 7.0%. Further, those that progressed to type 2 diabetes were identified. Results: A total of 3,046 participants were included (mean age 48.7 years) and 443 were observed progressing to type 2 diabetes, while 2,603 had only prediabetes related claims. All the CGM metrics progressively increased across uGMI groups except TA180, which did not increase above 5% until the uGMI group of 6.0-6.5%. Conclusion: CGM metrics of individuals with prediabetes are sensitive to progressive changes in glycemic management, providing insight into early glucose patterns that may inform future research.
