Abstract

Introduction and Objective: Diabetes mellitus is associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular risk and treatment with lipid-lowering drugs is recommended in all people over 40 years of age. The aim of this study was to analyze the prescription of lipid-lowering drugs in patients with diabetes in Spain and the LDL cholesterol levels achieved between 2018 and 2023. Methods: A retrospective analysis of lipid-lowering prescriptions and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with diabetes categorized by sex. was performed using data from the BDCAP (Primary Care Clinical Data Base) which collects data from 33.961.653 Spanish inhabitants. Results: In 2023, 63% of people with diabetes were treated with lipid-lowering drugs, 64.1% of men and 61.7% of women. This percentage has increased steadily over the last 6 years. Only 67% of patients achieved LDL<100 mg/dL, 71.6% of men and 62.3% of women, and these rates have remained constant from 2019 to 2023, Conclusion: Slightly more than 63% of patients with diabetes mellitus in Spain are treated with lipid-lowering agents, and this rate is increasing every year, but less than 70% manage to achieve LDL cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL, with a significant difference between men and women.
