Older-adults decrease mitochondrial respiration rate in humans (PCr1: 12.03 ± 2.98 vs. 14.05 ± 2.11 pmol·s−1·106 cells−1; PGMS: 16.58 ± 3.56 vs. 20.61 ± 2.11 pmol·s−1·106 cells−1).
“JO2 was similar between groups at baseline (P = 0.08) and lower energetic states (PCr2, PCr3; P ≥ 0.09), but was lower in older adults at higher energetic states”

SESN2 increases mitochondrial respiration rate in mice.
“Seahorse analysis demonstrated that Sesn2 deficiency in aged and young Sesn2 KO versus young hearts lead to impaired mitochondrial respiration rate with defects in Complex I and Complex II activity.”
