Adults aged 50 or older—3,955 from CANVAS and 4,035 from CREDENCE—were included in an analysis combining individual participant data from two randomized trials. Researchers assessed canagliflozin’s effects on end-stage kidney disease, or kidney failure, and deaths from cardiovascular disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels.

The analysis included 175 cases of end-stage kidney disease and 309 cardiovascular deaths. Canagliflozin reduced end-stage kidney disease by a relative 46.5%. In CREDENCE, the reported number needed to treat over three years to prevent one case was 27.5. The cardiovascular mortality estimate favored canagliflozin, but its range of likely values included no difference.

Why it matters

The analysis addressed whether canagliflozin could help adults aged 50 or older avoid kidney failure, an outcome relevant to health in later life.

Caveats

The analysis was limited to adults aged 50 or older enrolled in two trials. The abstract does not report their health conditions, drug doses or side effects.
