Hospital morbidity from breast cancer in Jaru, the Central Health Region and Rondônia, 2016 to 2026
Abstract
This epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study analyzed the profile of hospital morbidity from breast cancer in women aged 40 years or older residing in the municipality of Jaru, the Central Health Region and the state of Rondônia, between May 2016 and May 2026. Using secondary data from SIH/SUS via DATASUS, indicators such as hospitalizations, deaths, hospital mortality, length of stay and age distribution were investigated. During this period, the state recorded 4,658 hospitalizations and 368 deaths (mortality of 7.90%). In the Central Health Region, there were 924 hospitalizations and 66 deaths (7.14%). Specifically in Jaru, 153 hospitalizations and ten deaths were recorded, resulting in a hospital mortality rate of 6.54% and a mean length of stay of 2.4 days. Hospitalizations were observed to be concentrated predominantly in the 50 to 59 year age group. However, severity and mortality were markedly higher in the older age groups. Women aged 80 years or older had the highest hospital mortality rate (18.00%) and a prolonged length of stay (3.9 days), while annual mortality fluctuated without a continuous linear pattern. The results demonstrate disparities in the indicators according to territory and age, revealing greater vulnerability and case fatality among older women. These findings are fundamental to supporting epidemiological monitoring, improving oncology care and guiding regional health planning in Rondônia.
