THE LITERATURE BEFORE THE MECHANISM: A Comprehensive Literature Review of the Longevity Asymmetry Corpus and Its Relationship to the Existing Intellectual Record Across Ten Disciplines
Abstract
Charles Darwin did not discover a new area of biology. He identified a mechanism — natural selection — thatreorganized every pre-existing observation about life: what had been accurate description became, after 1859,accurate description missing its organizing principle. The organisms were the same. The fossils were the same. Thegeographical distributions were the same. What changed was whether the observations had a mechanism thatexplained them, or were merely catalogued without one. After Darwin, no account of biological life that ignoredselection pressure could be right about the thing that turned out to matter most — not because it was wrong aboutthe facts it addressed, but because it was wrong about what organized those facts. The Longevity Asymmetry Corpus (Huynh 2026a–z) performs the same operation on a different domain. The tentraditions this literature review examines — political philosophy, bioethics, AI safety, evolutionary biology, comparative historical sociology, critical theory, philosophy of science, religious and traditional thought, governancestudies, and the emerging biology of aging — all contain accurate observations, valid arguments, and genuineinsights. None of them, prior to this corpus, named the mechanism that organized the most consequential questionthey jointly address: what governs the distribution of biological time when that distribution ceases to be determinedby biology alone. That mechanism was invisible to all ten traditions for the same reason: it required a precondition whose absence hadnever been noticed because its presence had never varied. The Mortality Symmetry Axiom (MSA) — the historicalcondition under which biological lifespan, though unequal in timing, has been bounded in years rather thangenerations (boundedness), produced by many small causes rather than one purchasable intervention (diffuseness),and opaque to specific attribution (no bereaved family can identify a specific transaction that was withheld fromthem as the cause of their loss) (opacity) — was not a shared cultural assumption that could have been recognizedand questioned. It was a physical fact. The traditions did not choose to build inside it. They built inside it becausethe physical world had never, across the entirety of recorded history, given any of them reason to doubt it.As of June 2026, the MSA is failing empirically. NewLimit’s $435 million Series C (June 2, 2026) disclosed that alongevity research timeline of “more than a decade had collapsed to under five years,” explicitly crediting AIacceleration. Life Biosciences administered the first human dose of a cellular rejuvenation therapy on June 9, 2026— two days before the first paper in this corpus was publicly timestamped. The Centers for Medicare and MedicaidServices’ cardiovascular reclassification of semaglutide (March 2024) produced the first documented instance of theBiological Zero-Day Mechanism (BZM — the process by which AI-driven reclassification of a condition fromuntreatable to treatable produces a discrete, institutionally authored, dated event with a named price point —formalized as a Compound Poisson Jump Process in Huynh 2026d) operating in its predicted form: a specificcoverage decision, on a specific date, by a specific institution, for a specific intervention at a specific price, reclassifying a set of ongoing deaths from biologically inevitable to economically contingent upon accessconditions. Anthropic’s “When AI Builds Itself” (June 4, 2026) disclosed that task-completion horizons for AIsystems are doubling approximately every four months. On July 1, 2026 — after this corpus was publiclytimestamped, from an independent source with no knowledge of it — the UN Independent International ScientificPanel on Artificial Intelligence published its Preliminary Report, presented at the inaugural UN Global Dialogue onAI Governance in Geneva (July 6–7, 2026). Panel co-chair Yoshua Bengio stated: “AI capabilities are outpacingboth scientific understanding and governments’ ability to adapt.” The report independently confirmed that AI taskcomplexity is doubling every four to seven months — consistent with Anthropic’s June 4 disclosure and with theARSI parameter range in Huynh (2026d). Secretary-General Guterres stated: “The world cannot govern what itcannot understand. The cost of waiting is rising.” The report warned that “the window to establish effective globalgovernance remains open but may not stay that way for long” — language that is the operational description of F2 inHuynh (2026a), reached by an independent body from entirely different premises. The Self-Reporting Mechanism(Huynh 2026r) had identified three independent confirmations by June 2026. The UN Panel report is the fourth. These are not signals of a trajectory. They are documentation of a mechanism already operating at a formallyspecified rate. The mechanism is not arriving. It arrived. This literature review surveys more than three hundred sources across ten intellectual traditions, maps eachtradition’s engagement with the questions the corpus addresses, identifies precisely where the MSA functions as aload-bearing premise in each, and establishes four claims about the relationship between the corpus and the literatureit reorganizes.Claim 1 — The traditions were correct within their conditions. Every argument this corpus challenges was builtcorrectly for the world it inhabited. Rawls’s original position (1971) achieves genuine impartiality behind the Veil ofIgnorance for exactly the period during which the MSA held: agents stripped of their social positions face the sameterminal condition, and the veil is neutral across that dimension by construction. Foucault’s biopolitics (1976, 1978,1979) accurately describes how power over biological life operated during the period it analyzes: diffuse, capillary,state-mediated, institutional. Buddhist soteriology’s claim that 一切心想營為皆苦 — all conditioned things aresuffering because all are impermanent — is a logically valid inference from the universal mortality that the MSAguaranteed. Marx’s first premise of historical materialism (The German Ideology, 1845–46) — that “men must be ina position to live” before they can make history, on a schedule set by biology rather than capital — was a descriptionof a physical fact. None of these traditions failed. The physical world changed.Claim 2 — The corpus does not argue against any tradition; it specifies what each must reconstruct.Immanent critique — using each tradition’s own conceptual resources to identify where the MSA functions asload-bearing and what its removal requires — is the corpus’s primary analytical method. The corpus does not chargeRawls with circularity, Foucault with error, or Buddhism with falsehood. It charges each with having been built on afloor they never had occasion to name, and specifies what each must now reconstruct: Rawls must add biologicaltime to the primary goods list and specify a prospective, pre-BZM form of the difference principle; Foucault’sdiffuse normalization must be replaced by Concentrated Jump Biopower (faire découvrir, laisser attendre);Buddhism’s axiomatic universality of 愛別離苦 must be reconstructed under conditions where the very suffering itbuilds its liberation on has become asymmetrically distributed by wealth.Claim 3 — The corpus opens a new philosophical reality, not a new field. The distinction matters. A new field isorganized around a set of objects previously unstudied. A new philosophical reality is a reorganization of all existingobservation by a mechanism previously unnamed. The corpus does not claim a domain alongside existing domains. It establishes that every domain addressing human flourishing, justice, legitimacy, obligation, consolation, ormeaning now stands on the wrong side of a threshold — because the physical condition their organizing frameworksassumed, the MSA, is being empirically falsified at a formally specified and documented rate, with specific dates, specific institutions, and specific price points attached to each falsification event. This is not a contribution tobioethics, to political philosophy, to AI safety, or to sociology. It is a reorganization of the ground on which all ofthem stand. The traditions do not need to be defeated. They need to be reconstructed. Reconstruction is the moredemanding task.Claim 4 — The reorganization generates specific, falsifiable predictions that the existing literature cannotmake. The Biological Zero-Day Mechanism, formalized as a Compound Poisson Jump Process with arrival rateλ_bz ≈ 0.5 year⁻¹ (calibrated against the 2024–2026 BZM event sequence), predicts that the political activationthreshold G* = 2×10⁹ is reached in approximately 23 years under central parameter assumptions. TheARSI-Longevity Resonance Paradox (ALRP) proves that no parameter combination simultaneously satisfies thecost-reduction condition required for F1 exit and the acceleration-prevention condition required to avoid governancecatastrophe — a mathematical identity across the full parameter space, not an empirical finding. The SandboxGeometry (SBEA5, the four-variable geometric reduction of all thirteen models) estimates f(t₀) ≈ −0.23 at June 2026and df/dt ≈ 0.108 year⁻¹. Five explicit Popperian falsification conditions (F1–F5, Huynh 2026n) specify exactly whatevidence would demonstrate the corpus is wrong, with unconditional author commitment. No prior work in any ofthe ten traditions surveyed here has made predictions of this specificity about the structural trajectory of biologicalstratification, because no prior work had formalized the mechanism that generates that trajectory. The mechanism isnew. The predictions that follow from it are new. The falsifiability is new.The thesis in one sentence: The existing literature across ten disciplines was built correctly for the world itinhabited — and that world has changed in a way that requires every framework addressing justice, legitimacy, meaning, or consolation to reco
