Diabetes mellitus represents a significant risk factor for dementia, with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes contributing to cognitive decline through distinct mechanisms including insulin resistance, tau hyperphosphorylation, β-amyloid accumulation, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress.
