Effects of Brisk Walking Exercise and Warm-Water Foot Soaks on Reducing Blood Pressure in Older Adults with Hypertension at Balai Social Lanjut Usia in Meci Angi, Bima City

Abstract

Older adults are individuals who have reached the age of 60 years or older, a period that brings physical, psychological, and psychosocial changes. Health problems frequently experienced by older adults include cardiovascular system disorders (Astutik & Mariyam, 2021). Cardiovascular diseases are disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease and hypertension (Dewi & Syaifulloh, 2022). According to WHO, the world's older adult population in 2024 was 8% or approximately 142 million people. Problems occurring in older adults include decline in cognition, muscles, bones, and joints, as well as cardiovascular problems, one of which is increased blood pressure (hypertension). Nonpharmacological treatment consists of lifestyle changes. This study aimed to determine the effects of brisk walking exercise and warm-water foot soaks on reducing blood pressure in older adults at BSLU in Bima City. The research design used was a one group pre-experimental pretest-posttest design. The study population consisted of 50 older adults, and the study sample consisted of 35 who met the inclusion criteria, with Purposive Sampling as the sampling technique. Data were collected using observation sheets, a sphygmomanometer, and a stethoscope. Keywords: hypertension, brisk walking exercise and warm-water foot soaks, older adults.
