Physical Activity and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors among African American Women Residing in a Coastal Region of South Carolina: REACH Risk Factor Survey
Abstract
African American women have some of the highest rates of cardiometabolic risk factors leading to increasing risks of chronic health conditions. The purpose of this study was to examine physical activity (PA) levels and selected cardiometabolic risk factors among African American women living in two South Carolina coastal communities who participated in the REACH Risk Factor survey (2001- 2005; 2008-2011). A total of 4,160 African American women participated; of those 61.0% met PA recommendations and most reported not meeting fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations. Health-promoting strategies to improve these lifestyle behaviors in African American women are needed.
