Nurse-supported smartphone diabetes self-management in older adults

By Zills GM

While medications, healthy diet, and weight management are essential elements of any type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treatment plan, prescribing physical activity is a key aspect of person-centered diabetes management. Smart phone diabetes applications (apps) positively affect disease self-management in older adults. To optimize technology in healthcare, a 12-week DNP project introduced a free app titled Glucose Buddy Diabetes Tracker© and coaching to a population of adults who were age 60-75 and diagnosed with T2DM and had an elevated HgA1c of 7% or higher. A pre and posttest analyzed self-reported activity levels and quality of life measures after the digital health intervention. Although the sample was small, the results were promising. Data showed that self-reported quality of life improved, and sedentary time decreased by as much as three hours. This study captured the unique challenges and barriers associated with recruitment and active participation with digital health technology in older adults.
