The role of the physical therapist in preventing falls in older adults
By Teymeny AA, dos Santos MDJL
Aging is associated with physiological changes that can compromise balance, mobility, and functional independence in older adults, increasing the risk of falls. In this context, physical therapy plays a fundamental role in preventing these events through therapeutic exercises, balance training, muscle strengthening, and functional guidance. This study aims to analyze the importance of physical therapy practice in preventing falls in older adults. This is a literature review, with a search of the PubMed and SciELO databases, considering studies published between 2022 and 2026. Seven studies were included in the final synthesis. The findings indicate benefits for balance, functional mobility, and physical performance, although the reduction in the occurrence of falls was not uniform across all programs. It is concluded that physical therapy contributes to fall prevention by promoting functional capacity, safety, and independence in older adults.
