MOUNJARO (TIRZEPATIDE) IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY: CONSEQUENCES OF ACCELERATED WEIGHT LOSS

By Silva AVF, Costa EDS, de Lima IS et al.

Contemporary obesity constitutes one of the greatest public health challenges, characterized by its multifactorial and chronic etiology. In this context, the introduction of tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro®, represented a significant innovation by acting as a dual agonist of the receptors for GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This combined modulation stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, delays gastric emptying, and enhances the feeling of satiety, resulting in marked weight reductions. However, the widespread circulation of information about the drug on digital platforms has encouraged its indiscriminate use for cosmetic purposes, without formal medical evaluations and prescriptions. This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the main clinical, nutritional, and psychosocial consequences associated with accelerated weight loss resulting from the use of tirzepatide in the treatment of obesity. The methodology included searches of the PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and BVS databases, considering scientific publications between 2019 and 2026. The findings show that, despite the substantial metabolic benefits of the medication, abrupt weight loss without multidisciplinary support causes persistent gastrointestinal disorders, marked depletion of skeletal muscle mass (sarcopenia), fluid and electrolyte imbalances, biliary complications, mood fluctuations, and high risks of weight regain after discontinuation of use. It is concluded that continuous nutritional and multidisciplinary follow-up is an indispensable requirement to ensure that the drug's therapeutic advantages are not outweighed by the physical harm resulting from rapid weight loss without adequate support.
