An interventional study using individualized homoeopathic medicines with miasmatic approach in management of postmenopausal syndrome: A single arm open label study

Background: Menopause is defined as the time of cessation of ovarian function resulting in permanent amenorrhea. It takes 12 months of amenorrhea to confirm menopause, making it a retrospective diagnosis. Postmenopausal syndrome refers to mood swings, hot flashes, insufficient sleep, and genitourinary problems/sexual dysfunction, which adversely affect quality of life. Conventional management often relies on hormonal replacement therapy (HRT), which carries potential adverse effects. Although research on the usefulness of homoeopathic medications in managing postmenopausal symptoms has yielded promising results, it remains limited. Methods: An open-label, prospective, interventional clinical study was conducted over 18 months in the Outpatient Department of State National Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Lucknow (UP). After excluding drop-out cases, 30 patients with symptoms resembling postmenopausal syndrome fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included. Diagnosis was confirmed by detailed clinical history and symptomatology in women who had attained natural menopause without pathological or surgical causes. Effectiveness was assessed using pre- and post-treatment MRS scores at baseline and 6 months after treatment. Data were analyzed statistically using paired t-test, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Result: A total of 30 postmenopausal women were included for data analysis. At baseline, the majority presented with moderate to very severe symptoms on the MRS. After individualized homoeopathic treatment based on a miasmatic approach, 5 cases showed marked improvement, 13 moderate improvement, and 9 mild improvement, while 3 cases showed no improvement. The mean MRS score reduced significantly from 24.93 to 11.46, yielding a mean difference of 13.47. Statistical analysis demonstrated a highly significant improvement in symptoms. Conclusion: The present study highlights the potential of individualized homoeopathic medicines prescribed through a miasmatic approach in managing diverse manifestations of postmenopausal syndrome. By considering the totality of physical, mental, and emotional symptoms, homoeopathic treatment aims to restore harmony and promote overall wellbeing rather than merely suppressing symptoms. The findings suggest that individualized prescriptions guided by miasmatic evaluation can reduce the intensity and frequency of complaints such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, irritability, and fatigue, thereby improving quality of life. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the role of homoeopathy in women’s health and highlights the need for further clinical research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods.
