Optimizing Community Health Through Quran Murottal Therapy and Benson Relaxation to Lower Blood Pressure in People with Hypertension

By Arif N, Komalawati R, Yuswatiningsih E

Hypertension is a global health challenge known as the silent killer. In Ngawi Regency, hypertension ranks third among the most common diseases, with a prevalence that continues to increase, particularly among older adults. In the Mulyorejo neighborhood, hypertension management efforts remain limited to curative measures, necessitating an independent and sustainable complementary approach to help control blood pressure. This community service activity aimed to increase residents' knowledge of hypertension management and provide practical skills through a combination of Quran Murottal therapy and Benson relaxation as an adjunct to pharmacological therapy. The activity involved 20 participants and comprised three stages: preparation (coordination), implementation (education, demonstration, and therapy practice), and evaluation. Most participants were women (75%) and aged over 60 years (80%). The pre-test results showed that 30% had normal blood pressure, 30% were in the prehypertension category, and 40% of participants had stage 1 hypertension. After therapy, 70% of participants had normal blood pressure, 10 % had prehypertension, and 20% had stage 1 hypertension. The combination of Quran Murottal therapy and Benson relaxation proved effective in lowering blood pressure and increasing residents' psychological calm. This therapy is recommended as a safe, economical complementary method that is easy to practice independently to maintain blood pressure stability and improve the quality of life of people with hypertension in the community.
