Physical therapy strategies for preventing falls in older adults with cognitive impairment
By Riaño SPM
OBJECTIVE: To determine the intervention strategies with the highest grade of recommendation for preventing falls in older adults with cognitive impairment. METHODS: A documentary review study; the information search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, SciELO, MDPI, and ScienceDirect; combinations of the following terms were used: “older adult AND cognitive impairment,” “exercises AND balance,” and “physical therapy AND fall prevention”; publications from 2020 to 2025 were considered. In total, 85 articles were collected and 30 were analyzed, taking into account the Oxford level of evidence and grade of recommendation. RESULTS: The strategies with the highest grade of recommendation were cognitive-motor training programs, dual-tasking, multimodal exercises, Pilates, balance exercises and yoga, and the use of tools such as virtual reality and Wii Fit, as they produce positive effects on both physical and cognitive components in this population. CONCLUSIONS: Multicomponent exercises produce positive effects on balance and movement control and prevent falls in older adults with greater effectiveness and a higher level of evidence.
