Ayurvedic management of perimenopausal syndrome: A case study

By . A, Yennawar SM, Deshmukh JS

Perimenopause is a transitional phase preceding menopause, characterized by hormonal fluctuations leading to various physical and psychological symptoms such as irregular menstruation, hot flashes, insomnia, mood disturbances, and fatigue. In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated with Rajonivritti Avastha, predominantly involving Vata-Pitta Dosha vitiation along with Dhatu Kshaya. This case study presents the Ayurvedic management of a 46-year-old female patient who reported irregular menses, excessive sweating, irritability, disturbed sleep, and generalized weakness for six months. The treatment protocol included Shamana Chikitsa with drugs like Ashokarishta, Shatavari Kalpa, and Brahmi, along with lifestyle modifications and dietary regulation. Panchakarma procedures such as Abhyanga and Shirodhara were also advised to balance aggravated Doshas and improve mental health. Assessment was carried out based on symptomatic grading before and after treatment. Significant improvement was observed in the frequency of hot flashes, sleep quality, menstrual regularity, and emotional stability. The results suggest that Ayurvedic interventions are effective in managing perimenopausal symptoms by restoring Dosha balance and enhancing overall quality of life without adverse effects.
