SGLT2 inhibitors in chronic kidney disease
By Yau AA, Bajaj A, Rizvi A et al.
Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are a cornerstone therapy for kidney protection in individuals with both diabetic and nondiabetic kidney disease. Because many individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are managed primarily or collaboratively by primary care providers, it is essential that these clinicians feel confident initiating and managing SGLT2i therapy to optimize kidney care. This review highlights landmark clinical trials demonstrating the renal benefits of SGLT2i and discusses practical considerations for their clinical use. It also explores emerging evidence supporting the potential role of SGLT2i therapy in patients with end-stage kidney disease receiving dialysis, kidney transplant recipients, autoimmune kidney diseases, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, and nephrolithiasis.
