Metabolic Tuning meets Longevity at the interface with efficient prevention

By Fux V, Gröber U, Rappl P et al.

ABSTRACT: Immunosenescence and inflammaging are prodromes of pathological aging. Changes at the cellular level and in tissues and organs lead to a decline in physical/psychological performance and age-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases. Central to prevention and treatment is an adequate supply of macronutrients, especially protein, and micronutrients such as ω-3 fatty acids and vitamin D in combination with regular physical activity. In addition to their anti-inflammatory and antisenescent effects, EPA and DHA protect against telomere attrition, among other things, and influence long-term memory via BDNF. In the DO-HEALTH study, ω-3 fatty acids showed a specific influence on epigenetic aging processes and reduced infection and fall rates. According to the study, the combination of ω-3 fatty acids with vitamin D and a home exercise program resulted in a substantial reduction in frailty and invasive cancer.
