Menopause: A Primer for Advanced Practice Nurses Caring for Women

By Adrian A, Goodman ML, Broadway D et al.

Menopause is a complex, multisystem transition that significantly impacts cardiovascular, endocrine, neurocognitive, genitourinary, dermatologic, and immune function. This article reviews key physiological changes, clinical presentations, evidence-based screening recommendations, and both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options, including new FDA-approved therapies. Nurse practitioners are uniquely positioned to identify, evaluate, and manage menopause-related conditions through comprehensive, individualized care. Emphasis is placed on the use of validated tools, patient education, and risk assessment to improve outcomes. Understanding menopause as a dynamic life stage enables nurse practitioners to provide holistic, compassionate care that enhances quality of life for women in midlife and beyond.
