Efficacy and clinical applicability of dynamometry as an assessment and diagnostic method in physical therapy
By Cedeño GAZ
This research on dynamometry is based on its good reproducibility, validity, and clinical relevance, advantages that are maximized through the application of rigorous standardized protocols for positioning, stabilization, and test methodology. Within this framework, the objective of this research was to review data from recent scientific articles using hand-held and isokinetic dynamometry, examining their psychometric properties, main measurement methodologies and units of measurement (N, kgf, Nm), and diagnostic and therapeutic applicability. To this end, we conducted a narrative review of specialized databases, limiting the search to the years 2020-2025 and prioritizing studies that assessed muscle strength using these tools and reported data on their reliability, validity, and clinical implications. The results of the review show that grip strength is an important functional biomarker for diagnosing sarcopenia and frailty, as well as for estimating surgical risk and general health prognosis. In rehabilitation, dynamometry is capable of providing a granular assessment of the patient's health progress; adjusting therapeutic loads and assessing the efficacy of interventions such as manual therapy, eccentric exercises, or blood flow restriction training.
