Mobility status, activities of daily living, and some associated factors in patients with vertebral collapse and osteoporosis

By Quyền NN, Vân VH, Thủy NTP et al.

A descriptive cross-sectional study of 200 patients with vertebral collapse and osteoporosis (T-score ≤ −2.5) at the Spine Clinic, 108 Military Central Hospital (01-08/2025), used the Barthel Index and Lawton IADL for assessment; linear regression identified independently associated factors. The mean age was 69.97 ± 8.11 years; women accounted for 92.0%. The mean Barthel Index was 82.63 ± 16.95; 80.5% had varying degrees of dependence; transfers (77.5%), stair climbing (66.5%), and mobility on level surfaces (52.0%) were most affected. The mean Lawton IADL was 5.85 ± 2.07; 66.0% had impairment; housekeeping (69.0%), transportation (68.0%), and laundry (67.5%) were most affected. Age, BMI, and VAS score were independently associated with the Barthel Index (R² = 0.660); age, VAS score, and the number of collapsed vertebrae were independently associated with Lawton IADL (R² = 0.548). Pain severity was the factor most strongly associated with both scale scores; pain control and early functional assessment need to be prioritized in nursing practice.
