RELAÇÃO ENTRE QUEDA DO ESTROGÊNIO E O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE SINTOMAS DEPRESSIVOS NO CLIMATÉRIO/MENOPAUSA

By de Sousa LP, Souza NLG, da Costa DS

Perimenopause and menopause are phases marked by significant hormonal changes that can directly impact women’s mental health. The overall objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between declining estrogen levels during perimenopause/menopause and the development of depressive symptoms in women. This is an integrative literature review conducted by searching for scientific studies published in national and international databases, using previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that the reduction and instability of estrogen levels are associated with increased vulnerability to depressive symptoms, mood swings, anxiety, and irritability, due to the influence of this hormone on the modulation of neurotransmitters related to emotional regulation, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It was also observed that women in the menopausal transition have a greater predisposition to developing depressive symptoms compared to those in the reproductive period. It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between hormonal changes during the climacteric and the onset of depressive symptoms, highlighting the importance of early identification of these symptoms and the implementation of comprehensive care strategies focused on women’s mental health during menopause.
