The Relationship Between Postural Balance, Posture and Postural Awareness in Patients Diagnosed with Osteoporosis
By Elbastı MŞ, Çelebi K, Yentür SB
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis, characterized by decreased bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration, increases fracture risk. Osteoporosis may be associated with postural deformities, balance impairments, and reduced postural awareness, which is critical for preventing falls. The aim of this study was to examine differences in postural balance, posture, and postural awareness in postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis compared with women with osteopenia, and the relationships among these variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 32 postmenopausal women (osteoporosis n=16; osteopenia n=16). Functional mobility was assessed using the timed up and go (TUG) test, balance using the Berg Balance Scale (BDS), posture using the New York Posture Scale (NYPS), and postural awareness using the Postural Awareness Scale (PFS). Bone mineral density was determined using the lumbar spine T-score. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for between-group comparisons, and Spearman correlation analysis was used to assess relationships among variables.
