Impact of Aging on Laryngeal Function

By Alves GM, Impallari GN, Lumertz VS

Laryngeal aging, clinically termed presbyphonia, encompasses a set of physiological, structural, and functional changes resulting from the natural process of senescence of the vocal apparatus. This study reviews the literature on changes in the larynx associated with advanced age and their impacts on voice quality, swallowing, and airway protection. Through a systematic review of the Brazilian literature, an attempt was made to correlate muscle atrophy of the vocal folds, tissue dehydration, and reduced elasticity of the laryngeal cartilages with the onset of vocal complaints and risks of aspiration. The results indicate that laryngeal aging is multifactorial, requiring an interdisciplinary approach that includes otolaryngologists, speech-language pathologists, and geriatricians for appropriate management. It is concluded that understanding these changes is essential for preserving the functional health of older adults, promoting aging with better communication quality and safer eating.
