Association between the lean mass/fat mass ratio and cardiometabolic abnormalities in older adults from rural communities in Ecuador: analytical cross-sectional study
By Ramon JMU, Brito EGM, Quezada FCR
INTRODUCTION: The present project is derived from the parent study approved by the CEISH entitled “Comprehensive geriatric assessment in older adults aged 65–90 years from Cuenca canton 2024–2025.” Its purpose is to delve deeper into the interaction between the lean mass/fat mass ratio and cardiometabolic abnormalities in older adults in rural communities of Ecuador, considering the clinical relevance of these components in aging. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between RLMG and the prevalence of cardiometabolic abnormalities in older adults residing in rural communities of Ecuador. METHODOLOGY: Analytical observational cross-sectional study, based on anonymized records from the parent project. Multi-frequency bioimpedance will be used to obtain measurements of visceral fat and segmental lean mass by anatomical regions. Clinical variables such as glycemia, blood pressure, and lipid profile will be integrated. The statistical analysis will include bivariate correlations and logistic regression models to estimate the predictive power of the crossed indicators. RESULTS: It is expected to identify significant associations between the predominance of visceral fat and the decrease in segmental lean mass with markers of cardiometabolic risk. The findings will make it possible to propose clinical reference thresholds and construct stratified metabolic profiles, useful for functional and preventive geriatric assessment. General study area: Nursing. Specific study area: Health and nutrition. Article type: Original.
