Mapping EEG, Fitts' Law, Motor Aging, and Age Simulation Suit Evidence: A PRISMA-ScR Scoping Review
Abstract
This scoping review maps published evidence across four converging research streams: (A) EEG correlates of motor tasks in aging populations, (B) EEG during Fitts' Law tapping paradigms, (C) Fitts' Law tapping performance across aging populations, and (D) motor and sensorimotor outcomes during age simulation suit paradigms. Following PRISMA-ScR (Tricco et al., 2018) and JBI methodology (Peters et al., 2020), we will search six databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, PsycINFO, CINAHL) from 1990 to April 2026 using four arm-specific search strategies. Title/abstract and full-text screening will be performed by two independent reviewers using Rayyan (rayyan.ai) or an equivalent free systematic-review platform; final tool selection is pending evaluation of institutional access and licensing costs. A Cohen's kappa pilot on 50 records will be required (≥ 0.80) before independent screening begins. At the time of this registration, no database searches have yet been executed and no screening has begun. This document is being deposited as a pre-registration in accordance with PRISMA-ScR open-science guidance; the review workflow will commence only after the registration is finalized. The primary objective is to identify where these four streams fail to intersect and to derive testable predictions for first-generation EEG + Fitts' Law + aging and EEG + age simulation studies. Preliminary scoping suggests no eligible study combines EEG + Fitts' Law tapping + older adults, and none records EEG during age simulation suit paradigms — the surrounding literature appears sufficient to generate specific, testable predictions through an evidence-mapping synthesis and a published prediction matrix.
