Association of frailty with adipokine levels in patients with stable coronary artery disease
By Евгеньевна КК, Геннадьевна НА, Цыганкова ДП et al.
Aim. To study the associations between the severity of frailty manifestations and serum adipokine levels in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Material and methods. This single-center cohort study included 174 patients with CAD admitted to hospital for elective PCI. The mean age of patients in the study sample was 67,38±8,31 years (men, 61,5%). The "Age Is Not a Barrier" questionnaire was used to screen for pre-frailty and frailty (1-2 — no frailty, 3-4 — pre-frailty, ≥5 — frailty). A highly sensitive and highly specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the concentration of serum biological markers of adipose tissue remodeling. The following kits were used: AssayMax Human Adiponectin (ACRP30) ELISA Kit (USA), Diagnostics Biochem Canada Inc. Leptin ELISA Kit (London, Ontario, Canada), BioVendor R&D Human Resistin ELISA Kit (Czech Republic), and BioVendor R&D Human Chemerin ELISA Kit (Czech Republic). Results. The incidence of pre-frailty among patients with CAD based on the "Age Is Not a Barrier" scores was 38,0%, and that of frailty was 8,6%. Moreover, "frail" patients before elective PCI were significantly more often older women. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between the "Age Is Not a Barrier" scores and the serum concentrations of chemerin (ρ=0,283, p=0,030), leptin (ρ=0,289, p=0,017), resistin (ρ=0,235, p=0,043), and adiponectin (ρ=-0,338, p=0,039), as well as age (ρ=0,200, p=0,008). Binary logistic regression confirmed a significant association between the frailty according to the "Age is not a barrier" questionnaire and lower serum adiponectin levels in patients with stable CAD (AUC=0,766; 95% confidence interval: 0,643-0,889, p=0,013) among all the predictors examined in the study. Conclusion. Significant associations were found between the severity of frailty manifestations and serum adipokine concentrations in patients with CAD before elective PCI.
